Linda Leshay, Rafael Guadalupe
70 Hazelton Street @ Cutter Street Ridgefield Park rafael@studioleshayrafael.com
Friday 5pm - 8pm, Saturday 10am- 5pm, Sunday 10am - 5pm
Studio Leshay Rafael creates paintings that explore our humanity and the personal journeys we take.
Leshay's work explores the human condition through figures isolated and shaped by their environments and experiences. Using mixed media to develop narrative and psychological aspects of various subjects, she paints symbolic and metaphorical representations of their inner voices and external manifestation. She explores the conflict between how people are perceived by others and their subjective realities, considering their feelings of separation, isolation, hope, shame, loss, defiance, love, grief, and fear. Rafael's latest work is a series of polyptych paintings that cover his tumultuous childhood. This work is autobiographical and depicts the many influential people in his life and addresses the early indoctrination of beliefs while he lived at The Mission orphanage home. Rafael uses acrylics in multiple layers on wood panel. Rafael combines bright colors and strong outlines against textured backgrounds to convey the cacophony and challenges of his childhood.

I love painting, I love people and I love painting people- it brings me so much happiness, satisfaction and peace. As an artist, my love for people, their history, culture and what makes them who they are is what I try to portray in my art work. Portrait painting and drawing is both challenging and fascinating. In my art, my focus is on conveying the character of the person. When one is working on a portrait, the process of creating naturally lends itself to the experience of understanding and depicting the person you are painting and their life. I am drawn to look beyond superficial beauty in my subjects. Everyday people who have withstood the travails of time, their hardship and a curiosity of who they really are, intrigues me. The subjects who fascinate me are the farmer, laborer, vegetable vendor, the corner store keeper - these are but some of the unsung heroes of our lives. Through my art I try to bring visibility to those who may be otherwise “invisible”. I try to capture the life experience reflected in their eyes, the rich tapestry of lines on their faces and the tiny details that define their character and distinguish them as a person. There is a story in every face. It is this story I try to tell.
